The game has a projected release date of Winter 2012, with a closed beta starting in October 2012. The War Z is planned to be a single purchase. Users will have access to the full game without having to take part in an ongoing monthly subscription while having the option of purchasing items within the game. The War Z is expected to have both dedicated public and private servers. The game runs on the Eclipse engine made by Arktos Entertainment.
The War Z is set five years after a zombie attack wiped out most of the world’s population, leaving most of the world either dead or infected. Shortly before the game’s start, a new and rare type of zombie mutation has been discovered that allows the world’s living citizens to create a vaccine that will cure infected humans of zombification. The game play will have users looking for these zombies to create vaccines and to fight against packs of zombies.

A reviewer for PC World stated that “overall, the game looks terrific” and had the “typical alpha bugs” of a beta release, with the game holding promise. A reviewer for Joystiq praised the character personalization, saying that there were more options than they expected and that the gameplay would be easy for experienced gamers to understand. Another reviewer for Joystiq commented that one of the game’s biggest dangers was from other users, with the game currently not having any rules or policing of the PvP element.

The system requirements for The War Z are:

OS: Windows XP Service Pack 3 / Windows Vista / Windows 7 (enhanced for 64-bit OS)
Processor: 2.4 GHz quad core or better
Memory: 4 GB system RAM
Hard Disk Space: 3 GB
Video Card: DirectX 9 compatible with 768 MB video RAM or better (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 / ATI Radeon HD 5850)
